Welcome to Dr. Kate Brilakis' Learning Portal

Below are (seriously legit) resources for you to access as you explore the reality of climate change. Click on each picture to access the resource.

solid ice melting to
liquid water...
flooding!

Rainforest Alliance

as the climate changes, how is weather affected?

are there
greenhouse gasses
besides carbon dioxide?

how do we know our planet's
climate
 is changing?

Climate change IS
a national security issue

The Heartland Insitute...

totally BOGUS

anti-science

shlock!

Data.gov

NatGeo

NASA

Policy
vs
Science

it's allll so much! what can I do about it...?

IPCC

AGW =
anthropogenic
global warming

Unfortunately there are more but I think you get my point
so no need to give these #*&% any more air time...

the bottom line...

Trust LEGIT sources defined as those supported by SCIENCE and the REAL scientific community at large!

AAAS

you have a choice...

The Independent  Insitute...

more totally BOGUS

anti-science shlock

and not independent of fossil fuel money...

a shift in extremes...

Climate Change Rsources

below are some seriously ILLEGIT
"resources" that deny the reality of climate  change

cause it does!

A 2 degree warmer world will result in a profoundly disrupted climate...
"fiercer storms, higher seas, animal and plant extinctions, disappearing coral, melting ice and more people dying from heat, smog and infectious disease."
https://www.pbs.org/newshour/world/study-finds-nations-can-keep-global-warming-to-2-degrees-if-pledges-are-met#:~:text=This%202%20degree%20warmer%20world,heat%2C%20smog%20and%20infectious%20disease.

first...
weather
refers to short term atmospheric conditions.
climate is the weather of a specific region averaged over a long period of time...

so when politicians or pundits mock climate change when it's snowing out, they're either idiots or intentionally misleading you.

NOAA

go to the source...who are the very few
(<3% !!)
scientists who reject the data

and what are their motivations?

Although the CO2 content in the atmosphere was higher 55 million years ago, the increase took place over millions (!!) of years. Since industrialization began, humans have raised the level of atmospheric CO2 by almost 50% over a period of just 170 years.

as Earth's climate warms, sea ice melts making sea water warmer and less likely to sink. Without sinking cold water, the ocean currents could slow down or stop in some places.

Scripps CO2 Program

and what about temperature vs
levels of atmospheric CO2

also known as a greenhouse gas??

Attributing corn crop yield increases to increases in atmospheric CO2 is incorrect. Factors which contributed to yield gains include fertilizer application, irrigation, increased tillage, and the adoption of improved corn varieties from plant breeding developments, specifically from open-pollinated varieties to hybrids.

how does sea ice melting actually increase earth's temperature?

how do we know our planet's
climate
 is changing?

NCSE

Neil deGrasse Tyson is a Harvard/Columbia/Princeton  educated astrophysicist and head of the Hayden Planetarium.

EPA

what's with science denial??
 money...

politics...

A common remark made by climate change deniers is that Al Gore uses a private jet so how can he believe in climate change.
So, does Al Gore Use a Private Jet?
No, he does not. A lot of unreliable sources online have tried to claim that Al Gore owns and flies Private Jet when he travels around to various climate conferences, calling the man a hypocrite. That is simply not true.
In addition, VP Gore lives a carbon-free lifestyle as he offsets all the greenhouse gases that he produces through his frequent travels as a champion for combatting climate change.

so what is happening  to our planet's climate?

and all of this is all very well and good BUT...
the number one thing you can do to make a difference is
VOTE!

                                     some facts...
1. atmospheric CO2 levels have increased 40% since the industrial revolution/1870...
    2000
gigatons of CO2 pumped into the atmosphere or 400 ppm which is the highest

level measured since humans have walked this planet.
2. the C12 : C13 isotope ratio has changed dramatically due to the burning of fossil fuels
3. only the troposphere us warming , not upper atmospheric layers, hence not a solar anomaly
4. seas have risen 8 inches since 1901
5.  present levels tell us that the ocean pH will reach 7.8 in the next few decades eliminating
     30% of all marine species. (CO2 + H2H => H2CO3 =>  H  + HCO3
6. sea ice as decreased 40% since 1978
7. projected sea rise = 1 meter by end of century
8. projected temps = 2.5 - 5 degrees hotter by end of century
9. frogs are often among the first species to die off when ecosystems are out of balance. they           are a canary in this coal mine of a warming planet and
they’re dying off in huge numbers.

ok, how is this warming affecting our planet?

how are
greenhouse gasses
warming of our planet?
and why are they called greenhouse gasses...?
